Ditch Your Ego. Temporarily.

Go Big? Really?…

I know, I know. But going big is more than a motivational cliche or an invocation to take risks or gobble up as much and as many things as you can. It’s an invitation to release the self imposed limitations we put on ourselves. We all have to overcome doubts, fears, and beliefs we’ve either bought into or created out of thin air. Going big is a EGO KILLING STEP. To live BIG means we have to let go of the flimsy idea that LIFE IS THE WAY I THINK IT IS. Life is much BIGGER than us- we are part of something grander and subject to forces, relationships, powers beyond us. By going big we THINK big and allow ourself to take actions to create goals and outcomes that we never imagined possible. By going big we become BIGGER and make ourselves available to truly collaborate with life. “Going Big” is more than an invocation to take risks or gobble up as much and as many things as you can. Play Seriously.

Play takes courage, man.

Why?… Well, you have to be willing to express yourself -fully- and without expecting anything in return.

Real play happens almost entirely in the space of an unknown. Kids do this effortlessly. We call it pretending, and like to imagine it as practice for life.  But if you watch closely, you’ll see they’re improving life. They’re in a dance, an expectation FREE zone. They totally, completely, and 100% invested in the NOW. One minute they’re courageously dispatching dragons and the next they’re calmly conversing with Pirates.  You can tell legitimate play – SERIOUS PLAY- by the emotions that show up. Emotions happen when REAL contact is being made with life. But here’s what kid’s may have to teach us.  When emotions surface during the midst of serious kid play they’re shake them off like they never happened. They just continue on.

Feelings is often where we adults get all messed up. Despite feeling bad, we still have to deliver on our goals.

While this ability to play through feeling may come easy early on in life, the realities of adulthood make the adoption of this mindset tres challenging. What can be helpful is taking some time to assess and review the great moments of your life. You’ll see lots of the great moments emerged effortlessly. Naturally. That’s play! Whether they be personal accomplishments, career highs, or meaningful achievements the GREAT leaps come in moments of serious play. They also likely involved alot of work and commitment, but the work became secondary to the enjoyment that came through play. Maybe the effortlessness came working on a meaningful project, or while passionately moving towards a desired goal.  Maybe it was while seeking an object of your desire. Whatever the case, the feelings of effortlessness point to reality and power of serious play.

So some rules to consider with serious play.

1) To play SERIOUSLY you have to be willing to take yourself and your needs seriously. You will end up missing out on the benefits of play if you’re unable to care for yourself, and that may seem obvious. But self-care is often an afterthought.  When connected passionately and purposefully to the people, places, and goals we truly desire- the stuff we LOVE -we give ourselves permission to enter the realm of serious play. Success and happiness LIVES there. So get playing!  πŸŒˆ

Good Ain’t Right.

There are so many choices in life. Most of us have more than what we know what to do with.

Committing to a path of success and happiness is also a journey of mastering choices. We can also call it “self mastery.” While that may sound lofty, it isn’t. Self Mastery is simply a commitment to discovering and sharing one’s best self with the world. It’s a decision to take charge of one’s fulfillment in every area of life.  Where does one start with such a task?…

Some considerations:  some common themes emerge when you study the lives of past masters. One is they tend to stay away from judgment, period. This goes for labeling choices as either good or bad. They also see few limits. And they often view failures as key learning opportunities that ultimately help define us in the end. And so choices get framed as invitations to different paths and outcomes. Descriptions like “difficult” and “easy” are more common than descriptions  like right or wrong. But there is definitely an emphasis on learning to make quality decisions. Decisions are the biggies, as they are seen as the antecedent to actions. And it’s actions that ultimately define who and what we will become – we are told. Not our intentions.
So it’s this art of mastering decision making that really defines the true masters. What helps in mastering decisions? Notable themes like self-accountability, responsibility, and OWNERSHIP get tossed around a lot. But importantly so does permission to fail, learn, grow, and do it all over again. Masters like the idea that there’s really no such thing as failure, just more opportunities to learn more about what you need and want to become.

🌞So today, I invite you to turn and face your choices. Celebrate the ones you do have- because having CHOICES is what truly makes you wealthy!

Thoughts. Are. Choices.

On the success and happiness journey there are many challenges. Some come from the outside. And some come from the inside. Stress, anxiety, and an array of difficult feelings are to be expected. In old school terminology, “stinking thinking” can raise holy hell. While we may not always control how we feel and react we can definitely chose how we RESPOND. Perhaps the most powerful tool to take control and keep momentum is in CHOOSING thoughts that empower you best. Rather than fight the difficult thoughts and feelings, just notice them and kindly show them the door. Use each difficult thought as a signal to REVISIT a self-affirming thought. One GIANT thought is “I am exactly where I am supposed to be!” This powerful thought instantly disrupts the flimsy notions supported by the ego- stuff like “To be successful everything has to work out exactly as I planned!” Success and happiness are the results of a meaningful collaboration with life. We have to be willing to pivot, adjust, and dance. Choosing the powerful thought like these and reduces the struggle and puts you in a position to make magic with life again!

Passion Persists.

Life is a journey of mastery.

What does that mean?… Study the masters and you see that they many learned to change their focus from how much, how far, how deep, or how high can I go? – To the transformative question of “how WELL?”

The message and journey to do one’s best is at the heart of self mastery. Mastery is a craft that continually inspires bold actions -or- gifts that come from a heart connected to service. A first step comes with learning to honor YOUR passions. First comes the art of mastering service to self. To care and serve others your first have to learn to commit to and care for yourself. And in that process you have to discover your purpose, or what you’re inspired to DO BEST.

The second step is turning that passion outward to serve others. Life gets good when you honor others as powerfully as you do yourself. So ask yourself, what step can take towards mastery today? Can then really commit to honoring yourself. Don’t b.s. yourself, postpone, or imagine that your not suited for such an adventure. Devote the time and attention your passion deserves. Then turn that passion outward. Unleash the power of your gifts on the world! And have some fun along the way!

Get Up To Go Up.

The phrase “head up” provides a clue to the path of success and achievement. To head up the mountain that represents our goals, we have to carve out a trail. This takes effort. But how we get there is up to us. We can hike, climb, or if really ambitious run or fly. We can actually moonwalk our way up if we choose too. But no matter what our choice, there are simply no shortcuts. Hope, faith, and love helps add energy, and good company and laughing along the way is awesome too, but the journey upwards ultimately depends on us. It requires courage, self-accountability, and also time. We must learn patience, focus, and commitment as there’s a good deal of work to put in. Most importantly believe we will get there, and keep believing.  And if we do all of these things WE WILL REACH the summit. Just like the person in front of us did, and the person before them. Persistence is the key.

This phrase “head up” also points to the reality of RESISTANCE in life. Going up takes effort because there a force pulling at us from behind. There’s gravity. This can represent our former self, old beliefs, and the negative beliefs of people around us.  Gravity is a real threat that can keep us grounded. But persisting in the face of resistance provides wonderful rewards. We get to expand our limits, build strength, and reveal ever-deeper levels of our greatness. Thanks to this powerful force we are given a means to forge an identity, integrity, and discipline.

So head up today! And consider it as a mantra to fuel your journey of greatness!

Permission Is The Master Key.

Why is it so hard to live the lives we really want? Why aren’t we willing to put the same effort we put into building the dreams of others into our own? One word:

Permission.

We don’t give ourselves permission to do it. Why? Fear, for one. and two…. Hang tight folks, this is going to sting a bit, but I promise I’ll bring you back up.  Selfishness.  We like to imagine we’re somehow more special than the next guy or gal.  Special in the self-defeating sense of the word, like I don’t deserve the health, wealth, and happiness that others have earned. Perhaps I believe I am incapable, damaged, or unequipped to achieve the same goals.  This is a hot mess of b.s.

Why do we believe silly things like this?.. The sad truth behind selfish beliefs like this is they are rooted in outdated loyalties and laziness.  The loyalty may be to beliefs based in the past. Often many that we raised or taught to believe.  These ugly mantras often sound like… “I’m not good enough,” or “I don’t deserve happiness,” or “I’ll just screw it all up anyway.” There’s many versions of these. The laziness refers to the fact that when we actually believe we can’t have what we want, we CHOOSE the path of least resistance. It’s much easier to believe that we are destined to live an uninspired or ordinary life, because EVERYONE else is living that life too. We save ourselves alot of work when we believe stuff like this. We don’t have to put in the effort to prove we actually do deserve something better in our lives, and we don’t have to face the challenge of showing others they were wrong.  Often no good, downright dirty thoughts like these help prop up false beliefs like these. Stuff like…

“What’s so great about me?”

Or “Who am I kidding, I don’t deserve this.”

You can see why it’s so hard to give ourselves permission to live the lives we dream. We have to fight the gravity of false beliefs that took us a lifetime to build!  There’s a great deal of fear that comes with believing that WE ARE SOMETHING much more powerful than we previously thought. This is a scary first step. Hence most of us avoid it by choosing the easy route. We stay stuck perpetually looping in the realm of ordinary existence, because it’s easier.  It also seems safer that way.

But here’s the reality we need to wake up to.  LIFE doesn’t honor the ordinary! LIFE thrives on the EXTRAORDINARY! To get ourselves past the barrier of ordinary existence takes an incredible amount of steam that starts with ONE GIANT step. It’s a leap of faith that happens when we give ourselves PERMISSION to take action and live the life we’ve always dreamed about.  This is just enough to get us started, however. Much more energy is needed to break the orbit of ordinary existence. We have to fire a few more rocket boosters to blow past the fears and self-limiting beliefs that arise with each passing day! This takes courage, commitment and persistence. We have to commit to saying “YES I can and WILL do this!” -And do it as many times as it takes. This level of extreme commitment serves as a slingshot that can provide the momentum that eventually propels us out of the zone of low frequency existence forever.  We don’t have to come back! These steps represent a reset that places us firmly in the realm of creators. And that’s a place most of us won’t ever want to come back from! From this new vantage point we can look out onto a world and universe that’s alive with unlimited possibilities! We can take on as many dreams as we want. And empowered, we can revel in the the joy that comes with sharing our best efforts and creations with the world!🌈 🐲
